Your online shop is open 24 hours a day 7 days per week so it must be reliable! There's no such thing as a successful budget e-shop. Budget shops simply won't cut the mustard when pitted against your competition so buyer beware.

Things you need to trade online

  • Monthly maintenance budget. Your commerce web site is important and you need backup if things go wrong. You need maintenance to keep the shop running 24/7 and if a glitch happens you need the maintenance contract to enable someone to jump on the problem and repair it as soon as it happens. Managed hosting is expensive. there are cheaper hosts around but keep in mind that your shop could potentially be huge therefore you need server power else the pages simply don't load quick enough.   • Domain name maintenance. This is the cheapest part but you do need to pick a good quality domain and even buy the name outright if needed. Most domain names aren't actually yours so check with your host or registrar. Pick one that matches what you sell as this can be great for SEO. Costs about £20 for two years generally.
  • Speaking of SEO. You want people to find you! SEO packages run from a few hundred to many thousands per month so expect to budget about £400 per month to begin with.
